New Fall Intro Session

Will be starting on September 15th.

The 8 week session will run from 7 - 8:30 each Thursday and will cost $250. This cost includes your own set of equipment. The class will start with Foil, but each student will have the opportunity to try saber (LSF does not teach Epee).

The classes will teach the basics of fencing, from foot- and bladework to the rules and etiquette.

Reminder -

There is no practice this Saturday, 2/28. I will be refereeing at Notre Dame for the Midwest Conference Championships (Collegiate tournament).

Practice - 12/4

Our first practice of the winter season.

With the newly fallen snow, I ask that everyone leaves their wet shoes on the landing and doesn't track water onto the practice floor.

With the holidays all falling on Thursdays this year, we'll be having practice 12/4 - 12/18 and  then returning on January 8th.

This week's practice

I'll be there for everyone. After this past weekend's NAC, I've got a few ideas for all you foil fencers. Especially the ladies, as I refereed two days of Women's Foil - Junior and Cadet levels.

Practice this week

The youth practice will be at 5:30. The Junior/Senior practice begins at 7:00.

This is the first chance for those interested to learn how to fence. Come join us!

Burton Open

This weekend is Northwestern's Burton Open. The Askfred page shows a big field. This will be the first time since I moved to Chicago, that I won't be fencing in it.

I recommend everyone who can should go and at least watch some of the action, if not actually compete in it.

Goals

One of my main themes in starting this club was to set realistic, yet challenging goals. Both goals for the short- and long-term.

My immediate goal is to have a viable program that people enjoy and gain from. In the more long-term, I want a program that creates quality fencers who not only enjoy the sport but also improve their lives through a sport that can be practiced through every stage of life; from those who are very young to those who are enjoying their retirement.

Those are my goals, they will change over time, as they should. What are yours?

Youth Lessons

The time is slightly different - Youth (10-13) runs from 5:30 - 7. The cost for church members is $310 and $330 for the general public.

This price is the 8 weeks of fencing lessons, conditioning and strengthening sessions during practice time plus equipment. The equipment kit will be the mask, jacket,underarm protector, glove and foil or saber.

There will be a "buyback" option for those students who decide at the end of the session to not continue fencing and want to leave their equipment to the club. At the end of the 8th class, the student may turn in the equipment for $60. 

Once the Intro session is completed, or if the student already has the equipment, the price is then $75/month. This will cover ongoing lesson work, as well as planning and goal setting (as well as keeping track of those goals as the season progresses).

Each practice will start with a game and basic exercises to develop fundamental skills and muscle control that will allow the fencer to improve at a steady and solid pace. The Introductory session also includes discussions of the rules of fencing and judging the actions.

Beginner's Session

I am currently scheduling a session to start on October 9. It will run for 8 weeks until December 4, with a break for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Classes will start at 7 and run approximately 90 minutes. Students are then welcome to continue practicing for the remainder of the club's time.

The cost will be $330 for members of Lutheran Memorial Church, $350 for the general public.

The Intro class will introduce technical and tactical skills as well as outline the rules and conventions of Right-of-Way in Foil and Saber. Each practice will begin with a short conditioning/strengthening section to improve flexibility and control as well as strength.
